Longer season next year?  (United States)
We have not heard of any changes for next year and with the high water we now have it looks like we should have a longer season. This year was a little tougher fsihing than in the past and we have had longer season with the 09 season running the entire month of May. Some how many of my customers still had good success for their groups which is nice to see. It seems like some people are just unlucky and others have all the luck. You hear about those that paddlefish for three years before catching their first fish. How do you paddlefishermen feal about success rate and longer seasons. Would you rather have higher water and more opportunity with a longer season? How about catch and release, it is getting much more popular, are the days of catch and release good times of the week? Would appreciate input and will make sure the NDG&F hears about it.

Re: Longer season next year?  (United States)
It is way early but for all the rain and snow we have seen it looks even more like a long season in 2011. They have dropped the lake back to last years levels to get ready for the spring runoff so levels are still comparable to 2010 but the early snow and fall rains seems to be substantialy more. No changes announced yet from the NDG&F. We will have a lot of new paddlefish rods and reels next year with major impovements from the cheapest combos to the macho cool new stuff. Looking forward to the crazy time already. If you are looking for a Xmas idea we do have some new paddlefish gear that came in this week and we can ship it to you asap.

just about a month away and i can't wait . i live in S.D. and been going paddlefishing 20 years in williston. my sister and brother in law live there so it all works out for some good times and good fishing. I like the catch and release and you can't find a better group of people to spend the day with than on the banks of the river. AND BY THE WAY THIS YEAR I'M CATCHING THE STATE RECORD!!! see you in May.

Re: Longer season next year?  (United States)
It is still really cold up here for being late March but we have gotten lots of water coming from Montana and you would not believe the flooding we are having on the bottoms.  If you are familiar with the Pumphouse, the road going to it is now underwater!  The big curve south of the Pumphouse, the road above that is also underwater and closed.  All roads going back east on the bottoms are all closed and flooded and the strange part is it still has not really started to melt here yet.  Our snowfall for the year is within an inch of an all time record set back in the 1800s.  We are going to have a full lake and a big river but normally the June rise after the spring flooding does not happen till about mid May when the mountain water makes it this way.  All this spells long paddlefish season and with opener hitting on a Sunday the first weekend we should see the numbers of people showing up the second and even third weekend which will be full weekends of fishing.  The third weekend will be on the 14th & 15th then we could see higher water coming shortly after that.  A place to stay is going to be critical this year with all the motels booked solid during the week.  Some rooms may be available on weekends so call early if you are not camping.

Sorry b186305 but I'm catchin the new state record!

I would have to agree with Andy that this year will definitely be a longer Paddlefishing season. Everyone who got spoiled the last few years and was able to fill their tag (or even their group) in a day or two and thought it was easy will be in for a real shock and some dang sore ribs. We now just need some decent weather to melt the ice and snow and get the water back in the banks.

Just read long term forecast put out by Kevin Lawrence on KFYR-TV. He is predicting a below normal temps and above normal precip for April.....that sucks!
